Abstract
Criteria fur the occurrence of second order phase transitions in supercondu ctivity are developed. We derive a general formula for the lowest value of the second variation of the Ginzburg Landau functional around a solution of the associated Euler Lagrange equations. We use this formula to provide re lations between the Ginzburg Landau parameter and the geometry of the domai n that guarantee a positive sign for the second variation.
