The complexes of 5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoates with Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), C
o(II) and Mn(II) have been synthesized as polycrystalline solids and charac
terized by elemental analysis, IR and FIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric a
nd magnetic studies and X-ray diffraction measurements. The complexes posse
ss colours typical of the Me(II) ions (Cu - blue, Ni - green, Co - pink, Zn
- white and kin - slightly pink). The carboxylate group binds as a symmetr
ical. bidentate, chelating ligand (complexes of Co(LI), Ni(II), Zn(LI) and
Mn(II)) and bidentate bridging for 5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoate of Cu(II).
The thermal stabilities were determined in air and in nitrogen atmospheres.
When heated, they dehydrate to form anhydrous salts, which are decomposed
in air to the oxides of the respective metals or to the mixture of the oxid
es and carbon. The magnetic susceptibilities of the complexes were measured
over the range 77-300 K and magnetic moments were calculated. The results
show them to be high-spin complexes.
