Abstract
This study of the extent to which probation officers use threats of incarce ration when working with clients who have mental illness found that collabo ration between probation and parole officers and mental health workers sign ificantly enhances the coercive interactions between officers and their cli ents. Guidelines for collaboration between criminal justice and mental heal th systems are called for.
