This paper describes Australian counselling ser vices which use the telepho
ne as the medium for counselling delivery. It provides a background to tele
phone counselling and describes its uses as reported in the research and cl
inical literature. Special considerations in utilising the telephone to pro
vide counselling are discussed. The paper also reviews the clinical and res
earch literature to determine which counselling techniques are most applica
ble for use over the telephone.
