Abstract
We examined the relation of serum lipids and apolipoprotein E genotype to c olorectal adenomas among 205 cases and 220 controls with normal colonoscopy in Japanese men. With adjustment for body mass index, cigarette smoking, a lcohol use, and other covaiates, odds ratios of proximal and distal adenoma s associated with the presence of an allele epsilon4 were 0.59 (95% confide nce interval 0.23-1.45) and 0.99 (0.50-1.98), respectively. While serum tot al and LDL cholesterol were unrelated to both proximal and distal adenomas, serum triglycerides were positively related to distal adenomas, The findin gs suggest that altered lipid metabolism may be differentially associated w ith tumorigenesis in the proximal and distal colorectum.
