A hagfish (Craniata, Hyperotreti) from the Late Carboniferous Konservat-Lag
erstltte of Montceau-les-Mines (Allier, France). Several fossils from the L
ate Carboniferous of Montceau-les-Mines, France, are referred to a new taxo
n of fossil hagfish. Two specimens display impressions of two pairs of toot
h rows that are strikingly similar in shape and organization to the horny t
eeth of modern hagfish. In addition, by its slender body shape, this new ta
xon is more suggestive of modern hagfish than the only previously known fos
sil form from the Carboniferous of the USA. Living hagfish being exclusivel
y marine, this discovery raises the question of the reputedly freshwater en
vironment of the Montceau-les-Mines Konservat-Lagerstatte'. (C) 2001 Academ
