In a wavelength-division-multiplexed optical soliton transmission system, c
ollisions of solitons between different channels induce frequency shifts an
d time shifts of the signal which result in undesirable timing jitter. The
residual frequency shift after collision can be reduced by managing the dis
persion value periodically along the line. In this paper, we theoretically
show a mechanism of the collision-induced frequency shift and time shift fo
r a dispersion-managed line. We also analyze the collision-induced timing j
itter and Gordon-Haus jitter simultaneously and propose an optimal path ave
raged dispersion of the line with respect to minimum timing jitter. (C) 200
