Abstract
We describe an elderly patient with primary hyperparathyroidism and de mentia who was admitted to a psychogeriatric department because of del usions of new onset. While hospitalized he had three episodes of delus ions that coincided with mild hypercalcemia. Treatment for the hyperca lcemia resulted in rapid remission of the delusional state, but did no t induce any change in his cognitive abilities or in the severity of d ementia. We review the relevant literature and offer recommendations f or treatment and follow-up of elderly patients with hyperparathyroidis m associated with a delusional state.
