Abstract
The energy dependence of the vibrational branching ratio for exciting one q uantum of bending is determined for CO2 4 sigma (-1)(g) photoionization. Th is nominally forbidden transition becomes allowed for a photoionization tra nsition as a result of instantaneous symmetry breaking due to zero point mo tion, and is strongly enhanced by a continuum shape resonance.
