Analytical solutions of the Schrodinger equation for a two-barrier structur
e (resonance-tunnel diode) with open boundary conditions are found within t
he model of coherent tunneling of interacting electrons. Simple expressions
for resonance current are derived which enable one to analyze the current-
voltage characteristics, the conditions of emergence of hysteresis, and sin
gularities of the latter depending on the parameters of resonance-tunnel di
ode. It is demonstrated that the hysteresis is realized if the current exce
eds some critical value proportional to the square of resonance level width
