Abstract
A multilayer microcavity was electrochemically etched on a silicon substrat e and doped with erbium. Thermal processing under a nitrogen atmosphere opt ically activated the erbium-ions. Photo-pumping yielded room temperature em ission around 1.54 mum from the erbium-doped samples with the emitted light strongly modified by the microcavity structure. Emission spectra with a pe ak at 1.536 mum had a full width at half maximum of similar to 6 nm. (C) 20 01 Elsevier Science B.V, All rights reserved.
