The magnetization and static magnetic susceptibility of PbGdS are reported
for magnetic fields up to 9 T and temperature range of 2-300 K. The low fie
ld magnetic susceptibility data exhibited Curie-Weiss behaviour over the ho
le temperature range. The Sir,iss constant characterizes the overall exchan
ge as antiferromagnetic for all samples studied. The magnetic field depende
nce was fitted to a modified cluster model (Karczewscki et al., Solid state
Commun. 55 (1985) 249; Me Curie and Shofer, J. Appl. Phys. 35 (1964) 984),
which take into account the contribution of the pairs in order to determin
e the interaction between the nearest-neighbour Gd3+ ions. (C) 2001 Elsevie
