Abstract
Various types of oriented fiberboard can be manufactured by pressing the fo
rmed mats iii different directions. The properties of these boards reflect
the characteristics of the types of fiber orientation. In this paper, the v
arious properties of vertically oriented fiberboard were investigated in co
mparison with those of platen-pressed fiberboard. The effects of fiber conf
iguration on the properties of these hoards were also examined. The results
are as follows:
1) Because of the superior compressive characteristics. vertically oriented
fiberboard can be used as a core board for tatami-mats.
2) The internal bond strength of vertically oriented fiberboard was improve
d remarkablly by increasing the board density.
3) Thickness swelling of vertically oriented fiberboard was very low, but t
he linear expansion was high. On the other hand, the properties of platen(.
)pressed fiberboard showed contrary trends.
4) Large, long fibers of low bulk density improved bending properties of ve
rtically oriented fiberboard and platen-pressed fiberboard.
