Abstract
The structure of a novel purple carotenoid, rhodobacterioxanthin (1), isolated from Rhodobacter capsulatus was determined to be hydro-1,2,1' ,2'-tetrahydro-phi,phi,-caroten-20-al. Compound 1 showed a strong anti oxidant effect on lipid peroxidation induced by a free radical and a s inglet oxygen.
