Abstract
We present calculated second-harmonic-generation (SHG) spectra of the Si(00 1) surface based on a first-principles description of eigenvalues and eigen vectors using nb initio pseudopotentials. We also present SHG spectra for G e-covered Si(001). The theoretical results explain all essential features o f recent experimental SHG spectra of the Si(001)-(2 x 1) surface with low c overages of hydrogen and/or germanium, which alter the E-1 resonance in con trasting ways. The strong adatom specificity of the spectra results from re distribution of the adatom-related electronic states on the surface.
