Abstract
Character is the primary notion in ethics. It appears as the original given (both natural and social) in a human being who is determined in this way b y quasi-objective elements; this already constitutes a unicity. But the cha racter is unique again by the reflexive act of grasping of self, by means o f which the ipseity of a singular being is effectuated. However, as any sub ject is situated in the world and in history, only a community makes possib le this realisation of self as existence in character.
