The acoustical characteristics of a classroom are important variables that
can affect the academic achievement of all children. This chapter will exam
ine acoustical, technological, and rehabilitative solutions for improving c
lassroom acoustics and speech perception in the classroom setting. These pr
ocedures include: (1) physical acoustical modifications of the room; (2) pe
rsonal hearing aids; (3) hearing-assistive technologies; (4) modifications
in speaker-listener distance; (5) optimizing visual communication; (6) "cle
ar" speech procedures; and (7) strategies for improving listening.
