The examination of metal science questions in fusion welding using the nume
rical simulation is only successful, if the capabilities of commercial fini
te element programs are extended. Besides special modeling strategies new a
pproaches for the consideration of the convective energy transport in the w
eld pool and the occurring microstructural changes are needed, which are in
dividually fitted to the considered welding procedure and material. The lar
gest difficulty lies in the missing mechanical material properties which ar
e the basis for a successful numerical simulation The presented work shows
approaches for the solution for a variety of these problems.
