Densities have been measured for the monosaccharide (D-xylose. D-arabinose,
D-glucose and D-galactose)-NaBr-water solutions at 298.15 K. These data ha
ve been used to calculate the apparent molar volumes of these saccharides (
V-phi S) and NaBr (V-phi .E) in the studied solutions. Infinite dilution ap
parent molar volumes, V-phi .S(0) and V-phi .E(0) have been evaluated. in a
ddition. the standard transfer volumes, Delta V-t(E)0, of NaBr from water t
o aqueous monosaccharide solutions and Delta V-t(S)0, of monosaccharides fr
om water to aqueous NaBr solutions have also been evaluated and discussed i
n terms of the structural interaction model. Volumetric interaction paramet
ers for the NaBr-monosaccharide pairs in water are obtained and interpreted
by the stereochemistry of the monosaccharide molecules. An empirical equat
ion is proposed to correlate densities of the ternary solutions with molali
ties of two solutes.
