Abstract
The aim of this work was to describe the pineal, serum and retinal melatoni n daily rhythms in viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus), a nocturnal and s ubterranean rodent. A daily rhythm with a nocturnal peak and an increase du ring the light phase was found in all cases, with the seric rhythm being de layed with respect to the pineal one. Chronic lithium administration to vis cachas suppressed the diurnal increase of pineal melatonin, abolished the r etinal rhythm and had no effect on seric melatonin.
