Northern range extensions are described for two large decapod crustaceans n
ot previously recorded in the Canadian waters of the northwestern Atlantic.
A male inflated spiny crab, Rochinia crassa, was captured by a crab trap i
n 1999 on the Scotian Shelf at 43 degrees 45.08'N 63 degrees 45.77'W at a d
epth of 243 m. This species was reported previously from south of Marthas V
ineyard, Massachusetts (U.S.A.) to Cuba. A female purplehead gamba prawn, A
risteus antillensis, was captured by a shrimp trawl near the southwest edge
of the Grand Bank at 44 degrees 06.5'N 52 degrees 57.8'W at a depth of 652
m. Previous distribution records range from off Nantucket, Massachusetts t
o French Guiana.
