I. Seidl et al., Transportation home for patients with gynecological problems and pregnancy-related complications arising during travel, GYNAKOLOGE, 34(5), 2001, pp. 421-425
The German Automobile Club (ADAC) offers car and health insurance for domes
tic and foreign travel and is thus confronted with a myriad of cases within
Germany and abroad involving gynecology and obstetrics. Many of these acut
e problems arising during vacation or travel entail a hospital stay abroad
or sometimes rather expensive transfer back to Germany for inpatient treatm
ent. Depending on the severity of the illness and the clinical picture, com
plex problems often appear during transport, which require application of a
ll medical possibilities extending even to intensive emergency care.
Rapid return home is always aspired in cases of less than adequate treatmen
t. When, however, the quality of care meets German standards, the risks inv
olved for the patients during transportation should be weighed carefully. M
any of the problems occurring during travel can already be solved and minim
ized by the local gynecologist.
