The structure of [Cu-4(L)(4)(OH)(4)]. 4dmso (HL = sulfathiazole, i.e., 4-am
ino-N-(thiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide) consists of discrete [Cu-4(L)(4)(OH
)(4)] molecules connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Within each mol
ecule the four copper(II) ions, linked by four bidentate L- ligands and by
four hydroxo anions, are arranged at the vertexes of a square-planar parall
elogram with edge and diagonal Cu...Cu distances of 2.887-2.901 and 4.09 An
gstrom, respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurem
ents show an antiferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent copper ions wi
th J(1)[Cu-(OH)(2)-Cu] = -29 and J(2)-[Cu-(NCN')(2)-Cu] = -22.5 cm(-1).
