The mononuclear, high-spin Fe(III) complex[Fe(Hpoap-H)(NO3)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2
) acts as a ligand and reacts with copper(II) perchlorate to produce the sp
in-coupled, mixed-metal, dimeric octanuclear complex [(poap-H)(4)Cu3Fe(NO3)
](2)(ClO4)(4)(NO3)(4). 12H(2)O, which contains three Cu(II) centers and one
high-spin Fe(III) center in an alkoxy-bridged square gridlike structural a
rrangement within each subunit. Variable temperature magnetic data indicate
antiferromagnetic exchange between copper pairs and ferromagnetic exchange
between Fe-Cu pairs.
