The transmission line is an important component in the overall electric tra
nsmission system and its safe working is therefore important. It can be dam
aged by adverse climatic conditions. A steel-reinforced aluminium conductor
(ACSR) is often used for high-voltage transmission lines and a testing sys
tem has been developed using eddy currents to examine the outer aluminium w
ires, and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) to test the steel core. The principle
s and the method are discussed in this paper. The results indicate that it
is feasible to use comprehensively the methods on transmission lines.
