Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was implanted in vacuum by argon ions. The i
nfluence of experimental parameters was studied by varying ion energy from
2 to 20 keV with the same dose of 1.4 x 10(17) ions/cm(2), The ion energy s
trongly affected the surface composition, microstructure, and wettability o
f PTFE. All as-implanted PTFE samples were aged in air for 1 year. After ag
ing, the surface-restructuring behavior was observed on the surface of samp
les implanted with ion energy of 2 and 5 keV. The water contact angle of ag
ed samples implanted with ion energy of 5 and 10 keV decreased up to 22 deg
rees and 11 degrees, respectively. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B
