Pb. Heenan, The correct name for Chilean pelu (Fabaceae): the identity of Edwardsia macnabiana and the reinstatement of Sophora cassioides, NZ J BOTANY, 39(1), 2001, pp. 167-170
The earliest available legitimate name for the Chilean tree legume pelu is
Sophora cassioides; this is reinstated and a type specimen selected from th
e herbarium of F. Philippi. Pelu has previously been known as S. microphyll
a, a name now considered to belong to a New Zealand endemic, and also as S.
macnabiana and S. microphylla subsp. macnabiana. Type material of Edwardsi
a macnabiana, the basionym of S. macnabiana and S. microphylla subsp. macna
biana, has not been found in the Robert Graham herbarium and there is insuf
ficient information in the protologue to allow the selection of a suitable
neotype. The name E. macnabiana, and its nomenclatural synonyms, are theref
ore abandoned. It is also shown that the combination Sophora macnabiana, wh
ich has been attributed to Skottsberg, is not validly published.
