The substitution of ruthenium for manganese has been studied in the Sm1-xCa
xMnO3 series, leading to a magnetic (T vs x) phase diagram where a large re
gion of ferromagnetic metallic phases appears. These results are compared w
ith those obtained by chromium doping in the same system, showing the much
stronger effect of ruthenium. Other lanthanide series have also been charac
terized in order to investigate the size effect in the ruthenium doped comp
ounds. A comprehensive magnetic study by powder neutron diffraction has bee
n performed on the Sm0.2Ca0.8Mn0.9Ru0.1O3 compound in connection with the p
hase separation evidenced by the susceptibility;measurements. Finally, mode
ls for orbital and spin ordering are proposed to explain the Cr and Ru indu
ced ferromagnetism and metallicity.
