Abstract
An uncompensated antiferromagnetic surface of CoO is essential for the esta blishment of exchange bias. Exchange coupling for compensated surfaces is m anifested by a large coercivity but no exchange bias field. Degradation of a compensated surface leads to an exchange bias field. These results clarif y a key outstanding issue in exchange bias.
