We report triple-differential cross-section measurements for the three 2p(4
) (2S+1) L final states of direct photo double ionization in neon. Through
comparison with a measurement under equivalent experimental conditions in h
elium and through numerical integrations of the parameterizations for the r
espective cross sections, all of the reported data are simultaneously put o
n an absolute scale, and absolute values for the state-dependent total cros
s sections in neon are given. The total cross sections are in agreement wit
h a calculation far The direct process performed in many-body perturbation
theory and show that a large fraction of the observed doubly charged ion yi
eld is attributable to indirect two-step double ionization.
