The photochromic process of 3-phenyl-3-[1,2-dimethylindol-3-yl]-3H-naphtho[
2,1-b]pyran [I] has been examined with nanosecond laser flash photolysis te
chniques in cyclohexane and acetonitrile respectively. Both excited singlet
state and triplet state are involved in the photocoloration process. The d
ecay kinetics of photoproducts are also studied. The maximum absorption wav
elength and lifetime of the transient species are solvent dependent.
