The synthesis of new telechelic polydimethylsiloxanes containing aziridine
end groups by 1,3-dipolar addition of 4-methoxyphenylazide to vinyl-termina
ted siloxane was investigated. The peculiarity of this system, as proved on
the low molecular weight model compound based on 1,3-divinyl-1,1,3,3-tetra
methyldisiloxane, consists in the formation of a single addition functional
ity of aziridine type. The structure of the final and intermediate products
was established by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. The aziridine units lin
ked to the siloxane chains were proved to undergo further cationic polymeri
zation and to yield crosslinked siloxane based structures.
