The present paper studies the influence of two different spacers used in co
polymerization reactions over the capacity of generating a mesophase. The p
olymers were synthesized by phase transfer catalysis in liquid-liquid syste
m starting from 4,4'-dihydroxyazobenzene (DHAB) and 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl
(DHD) as mesogen groups and 1,3-dibromopropane (DBP), bis(2-chloroethyl)eth
er (BCEE), 1,6-dichlorohexane (DCH) and bis(2-chloromethyl)oxetane (BCMO) a
s spacers. The copolyethers were characterised by H-1-NMR, DSC and optical
microscopy techniques. Only DHAB based polymers presented liquid crystallin
e properties, the mesophase behaviour being an enantiotropic one.
