Abstract
The planar multilayer dielectric structure (PMLS) has been used as a m odel for large diameter vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, to an alyse the vertical and in-plane components of spontaneous emission (SE ), Both lambda and lambda/2 cavities have been considered. Calculation s show a high level of in-plane SE for both cases, The results are dis cussed in the context of recent experimental measurements of in-plane emission in VCSELs.
