Abstract
Theodore von Karman lived for 82 years. During his lifetime he witnessed, a nd to some degree participated in, the technical development of high-speed flight, from the regime of subsonic flight near the speed of sound to trans onic, supersonic, and hypersonic flight. What a remarkable time to have liv ed. This paper is a brief summary of the historical and technical evolution of flight, as witnessed by von Karman.
