A novel technique for the determination of hydroxyl radical is described. T
he method employed the reaction of hydroxyl radical with dimethyl sulfoxide
quantitatively to generate a methyl radical, which then coupled with nitro
xide-linked naphthalene and led to a large increase in fluorescence intensi
ty. The fluorescence increment was proportional to the concentration of hyd
roxyl radicals down to 1 x 10(-7) mol l(-1). The proposed method was demons
trated to be capable of detecting hydroxyl radicals generated in Fenton sys
tems. It proved to be a simple and sensitive technique for the determinatio
n of hydroxyl radicals. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
