Abstract
Thickness measurements of transparent coatings on polymer, paper or metalli c substrates used as packaging materials are reported. It is shown that thi ckness evaluations in the range between 1 and 75 mum are feasible by contac t photothermal techniques (photoacoustics (PA), photopyroelectric (PPE) met hod), as well as by non-contact ones (photothermal radiometry (PTR)). The i mportance of signal normalization using appropriate reference samples and t hat of correction by background substraction is particularly stressed.
