We propose a new structure of decision feedback adaptive equalizer (DFE) su
itable for use in mobile radio systems. The proposed structure named Commut
ating Decision Feedback Equalizer (CDFE) has two DFEs that operate in a com
mutating fashion; the two DFEs commutate between training and equalization.
Such a commutating operation effectively lengthens the equalizer tracking
period over time variant channels. Thus, the CDFE has a superior performanc
e over the conventional DFE in fading channels. Simulation results are pres
ented in the paper.
