We describe how similarity indices may be applied to semiquantitatively com
pare the molecular interaction fields, such as electrostatic and hydrophobi
c potentials, oi proteins. We then review ways in which this approach has b
een used to investigate protein interaction properties in diverse applicati
ons ranging from in-depth comparison of pairs of proteins to large-scale an
alysis of hundreds of modeled protein structures. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Son
