Abstract
We show that the report of Raychaudhuri et al (1998 J. Phys.: Condens. Matt er 10 L191), that the samples of nominal compositions La2.3-xYxCa0.7Mn2O7 ( x = 0.0, 0.3, 0.5) are electron doped layered manganates, is incorrect. Rie tveld profile refinement of the x-ray diffraction data of the sample La2.3C a0.7Mn2O7 (x = 0.0) synthesized by us following the same synthesis process as reported by Raychaudhuri et nl clearly shows that it forms a multiphase mixture comprising hole doped perovskite manganates and lanthanum oxide.
