This article addresses some of the unique advantages that uniplanar technol
ogy can offer the microwave circuit designer. In contrast to the convention
al microstrip approach, uniplanar techniques allow a mixture of transmissio
n line configurations to be used together, thereby making available a wide
range of novel passive microwave structures. Specific examples of the use o
f series and shunt elements in coplanar waveguide (CPW) are discussed and t
he design of a reduced size Wilkinson divider is presented.
