Abstract
In the design stage of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider/CERN, Switzerland), i t is necessary to develop non-destructive beam size monitors. In this Frame work a profile monitor (BIGP) was proposed based on velocity spectrum measu rements of the rest gas ions accelerated by the beam space-charge force. Th e paper presents simulation studies of the detector, a description of the p rototype installed in the SPS and first measurement results. (C) 2001 Elsev ier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
