Abstract
We present numerical results on the propagation of femtosecond pulses in ai r including multiphoton ionization. group-velocity dispersion, space-time f ocusing, self-steepening, Raman response. and higher-order chi ((5)) defocu sing. It is shown that the self-steepening terms cause strong blue shifting of the spectrum generating a white-light continuum. Our results are in goo d qualitative agreement with experimental observations. (C) 2001 Elsevier S cience B.V. All rights reserved.
