Absolute rate constants were measured for the 1,2-CH2, 1,2-cyclopropyl, and
1,2-CMe2 rearrangements of spiropentylchlorocarbene (5), [3]-trianguiylchl
orocarbene (6), and tetramethylcyclopropylchlorocarbene (7), The factors re
sponsible for the observed relative migratory aptitudes (cyclopropyl > CH2
> CMe2) were analyzed with the aid of electronic structure calculations.
