M. Gundel et U. Schatzmann, BACK-PROBLEMS IN THE HORSE .3. RECOMMENDA TIONS FOR THE CLINICAL EXAMINATION OF HORSES PRESENTED FOR INVESTIGATION OF A BACK PROBLEM, Pferdeheilkunde, 13(3), 1997, pp. 213-218
Due to the increasing awareness of owners to back problems in their ho
rses, the veterinarian is confronted with increasing frequency with ho
rses with back problems suspected by the owner. The clinical signs sho
wn by those horses are often complex and vary individually, which coul
d be a problem for the examiner. Therefore the principles of examining
the horse's back must be well defined. Recommendations for an examina
tion protocol are given based on the experiences of a two year study w
ith more than one hundred, primarily warmblooded, horses used for dres
sage, show jumping and pleasure riding.
