A study is done to compare two models (that of Hobbs and Raoof from 19
82, and that of Jolicoeur and Cardou from 1996) that use a semicontinu
ous approach to predict the behavior of multilayered wire strands unde
r axial and bending loads. Theoretical differences and similarities be
tween the two models are highlighted. Static stiffness results are obt
ained for a seven-wire steel strand and for a multilayered electric ov
erhead conductor. For stiffness in tension and torsion, both models ap
pear quite equivalent but, for bending stiffness, the Jolicoeur and Ca
rdou model agrees better with more classical models and with published
experimental results. Recommendations are given to improve prediction
s from both models.
