Abstract
We report that 2 mug of azithromycin/ml inhibits the quorum-sensing circuit ry of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1. Addition of synthetic autoinducer s partially restored the expression of the trancriptional activator-encodin g genes lasR and rhlR but not that of the autoinducer synthase-encoding gen e lasI. We propose that azithromycin interferes with the synthesis of autoi nducers, by an unknown mechanism, leading to a reduction of virulence facto r production.
