This review summarizes the findings of substance abuse research published t
hroughout the year 2000, which used noninvasive neuroimaging approaches. Th
ese findings encompass abnormalities in brain morphometry, integrated brain
activity, cognitive activation and neurochemical systems associated with v
arious aspects of substance abuse disorders. The methodological strengths a
nd weaknesses of these studies are critically addressed, and future researc
