Abstract
In 1998, the IBM display group demonstrated a 16.3 " diagonal QSXGA (Quad S XGA) direct view TFT-LCD with the highest information content ever shown [1 7]. The panel has 2560 x 3 columns and 2048 rows and the subpixel size is 4 2 mum (h) X 126 mum (v) which is equivalent to a full color resolution of 2 00 ppi (pixel per inch). In this panel, the conventional single domain twis ted nematic (TN) liquid crystal mode was adopted, i.e. no wide viewing angl e technology was implemented. In this paper, we demonstrated that the ridge and fringe field technology [18] can be implemented in this high resolutio n liquid crystal display to achieve wide viewing angle capability.
