In this paper we introduce optical configurations of single-polarizer non-t
wisted liquid crystal cells for high-contrast reflective displays that can
be applied to vertical-switching modes as well as horizontal-switching mode
s. In particular, optical configurations that can provide high contrast wit
hout using a wide-band quarter-wave film are proposed. By fabricating refle
ctive cells with the introduced configurations, we demonstrate their optica
